Lake Malawi, between Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, impresses biologists with its breathtaking abundance of fish and tourists with its fabulous golden sandy beaches that make it one of the most important tourist destinations in Malawi.

In the heart of East Africa is Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa and the ninth largest lake in the world. It lies at the triangle between Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique in the East of African. For the protection of the fantastic fish wealth the Malawi lake national park in the south of the lake belongs since 1984 to the UNESCO world natural heritage.

Lake Malawi is named after the Yao word for lake, “nyasa”, also Nyassa (Tanzania) or Niassa (Mozambique). With a size of 560 by 80 kilometers and a depth of about 700 meters, Lake Malawi on the African continent is only surpassed by the lakes of Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Lake Malawi has existed for over a million years. During this period, fantastic wildlife developed in and around Lake Malawi. Especially famous is the Malawi Lake for its incredible number of cichlids, which are well-known in Europe as the Malawi cichlids. If you want to see these unique fish and do not want to dive in Lake Malawi, you just have to go to the nearest pet shop and search the aquariums there.

Lake Malawi is home to an incredible 450 different species of cichlids, most of them endemic and nowhere else in the world. In addition to the cichlids are still catfish, carps, tartar, and spiny eels. Four cichlids and a catfish species are fished in the southern area as food fish from Lake Malawi and consumed locally or even exported. To avoid over fishing, the Malawi Lake National Park was established at Monkey Bay in 1980.

The Malawi Lake National Park was the world’s first freshwater national park. The protected area includes not only the water surface, but also a 100-meter-wide stretch of land on the shore and some islands. Within its borders live not only the sea dwellers, but also baboons, antelopes and of course a fair amount of birds, such as ospreys, cormorants, night swallows, kingfishers, kestrels, club slate or hammerheads with their characteristically formed head feathers.

An 800-year-old baobab tree in the Malawi Lake National Park is said to have been the favourite place of the Scottish missionary and explorer of Africa, David Livingstone. Here he delivered his sermons and chatted with other missionaries.
